What We Do

We play with our food. So, no matter what we create for you, it will be presented with style and a bit of whimsy.

49 Square thrives on the challenge of large events. As veterans in the industry we have all worked on parties where the guest count numbered in the thousands. We may be a new company, but we’re not newcomers and we have all worked as a team before. We’ve got our groove on.

We’ll create the perfect environment for your celebration or event. If you need a venue, we’ll help you find one. If you have a venue, we’ll help you decorate it. We can help you with entertainment, florals, photography, lighting and A/V, tenting and interactive themes. We can provide as much assistance as you need.

Testimonials

We’re fortunate to work with fantastic clients from across the globe to design unique catered experiences.

  • The catalyst for our magical evening

    Domenica Catelli

    Sonoma Academy

I had the pleasure of enjoying Chef Walker’s food for the first time many years ago in San Fransisco. It was that experience that led me back to him as the caterer for my wedding, and more recently a 350 person event; Sonoma Academy’s Big Night Out. After sampling food from numerous caterers, we unanimously selected 49 Square for the event. The food was FANTASTIC! Flavorful, innovative, fresh and hot. We had a magical evening, and the team at 49 Square was truly the catalyst.

  • Above and Beyond

    Gary Head

    ZAK Architecture

49 Square Catering went above and beyond expectations at our event. We had great communication during the planning stages, wonderful food, and the service was top notch. We continue to call them for all our catering needs.

  • 100% satisfied. Top notch. A+

    Margaux Hardy

    Sonoma Academy Advancement

Thank you for your exceptionally divine cuisine and outstanding service at our annual fundraiser and dinner. The menu you designed was exquisite – starting with five passed appetizers during our silent auction and reception and culminating in a full family style Indian feast for our guests to savor during our evening program. Your professional and attentive team maneuvered seamlessly throughout the dining room ensuring that our guests felt well attended to and 100% satisfied. Top notch. A+

  • Every Aspect

    Lisa Zahner

We enjoyed every aspect of working with 49 Square Catering for our special event. The menu was simple, amazing, and beautifully presented, their staff friendly and professional, and best of all — everything was on budget!

Mark Walker

Mark Walker

CEO and Executive Chef

Executive Chef Mark Walker has spent 25 years developing and honing his culinary techniques, a calling he knew he was destined for since childhood when he would watch The Galloping Gourmet and Julia Child on TV. Eventually, he had the honor of cooking for them both. One of his most prized possessions is a copy of Vincent Price’s “A Treasury of Great Recipes”, a book he has had since childhood.

Most notably in the San Francisco Bay area, Mark has served as Executive Chef at restaurants such as P.J’s Oyster Bed, Val 21 and Babaloo Tapas Restaurant, as well as serving as the Executive Chef and Director of Catering Services for the Cellar at Macy’s Union Square. Mark’s eclectic background allowed him, as founding partner and Director of Culinary Operations, to create original, diverse menus featuring local artisanal foods for Global Gourmet Catering. Most recently Mark launched and operated a shared use commercial commissary called SF FoodLab allowing food entrepreneurs to gain access to wholesale markets through commercial kitchen facility rentals.

Mark’s love of artisanal foods has inspired him to create some of his own products. Most recently, he has been producing honey from his own hives (Elaine, our Director of Sales, keeps bringing in her empty jars for refills). He has amassed a collection of hundreds of cookbooks of varying authors and cuisines.

Mark and his wife, Brenda, love to travel and Europe is a favorite destination. When in Europe, Mark usually finds time to take a class or two with some of the world’s most famous chefs, always learning new techniques from the masters of their craft.

Elaine Herman

Elaine Herman

Director of Sales and Marketing

A native New Yorker, Elaine relocated to the Bay Area when she began her career in hospitality almost 20 years ago. Working as a banquet server while attending culinary school, she began her education as an event specialist while simultaneously studying to be a pastry chef. Upon graduating, she quickly learned that the kitchen wasn’t where she wanted to be, and so began a professional journey that included several years as the Food & Beverage Director at an exclusive country club and as the onsite General Manager of the corporate dining program at a large Silicon Valley software company. Even though she was on the management fast track, she kept gravitating back towards special events. Following her heart, she began to focus on catering and special event production, where she met Mark and Brenda while working for Global Gourmet Catering. She has had the good fortune to work on celebrity events, large scale corporate events for thousands of people, meetings, conferences and incentives, and of course, weddings. This background has served her well, as she has an intimate knowledge of event logistics, venues, catering, décor, rentals…everything that takes place behind the scenes. Most recently working for a Destination Management Company, she has gained insight into the planning process for citywide conferences, which typically have thousands of attendees. She maintains relationships with the best and brightest of the Bay Area events community.

A firm believer in supporting the local professional community, Elaine has served on the Board of Directors of the ISES-NCC Chapter. She was recognized by ISES as Northern California’s 2009 Rising Star. She is also very active in the MPINCC Chapter and co-chaired the 2010 Gala and Silent Auction, for which she was awarded Meeting Professional of the Quarter and was nominated for Meeting Professional of the Year. In 2012 she co-chaired the ISES-NCC Chapter’s Annual Gala and Silent Auction, a party that is still talked about as the one to beat. For her efforts, she was recognized with the chapter’s Heart and Soul Award.

Elaine has recently taken up running and has completed several half marathons. She can occasionally be persuaded to pull her whisk out of retirement for friends and family.
