49 Square Catering serves the entire Bay Area, from Monterey to Wine Country and beyond. From intimate weddings to large scale, corporate productions, our team of experienced event professionals can help you plan any type of event. Our job is to ensure the success of your event. We’re here to help you play with your food.

What We Do

We play with our food. So, no matter what we create for you, it will be presented with style and a bit of whimsy.

Whether your event is a formal seated wedding feast or a casual cocktail reception, we love crafting custom experiences for our clients and their guests. Multi-cultural wedding? No problem. Weeklong conference with meals throughout? Piece of cake. Reception for 5,000 people? What, that’s all you’ve got?

At 49 Square, we love it when our clients challenge us to create something new and unique. And it’s not just about the food. Our stunning visuals and custom fabricated displays will delight your guests and frequently offer interactive components.

We’ll create the perfect environment for your celebration or event. If you need a venue, we’ll help you find one. If you have a venue, we’ll help you decorate it. We can help you with entertainment, florals, photography, lighting and A/V, tenting and interactive themes. We can provide as much assistance as you need.

    They were creative and flexible in putting the menu together. The food and drink were outstanding and original, and well suited to the famous Bay Area food culture without being yuppyish… Our guests, varied in age and background, raved about the food.

    Hiring 49 Square Catering was one of the best wedding decisions we made. It has been a little over three weeks since our wedding and family and friends are still calling us to talk about how amazing the food was. Mark Walker

CEO and Executive Chef

Executive Chef Mark Walker has spent 25 years developing and honing his culinary techniques, a calling he knew he was destined for since childhood when he would watch The Galloping Gourmet and Julia Child on TV. Eventually, he had the honor of cooking for them both. One of his most prized possessions is a copy of Vincent Price’s “A Treasury of Great Recipes”, a book he has had since childhood.

Most notably in the San Francisco Bay area, Mark has served as Executive Chef at restaurants such as P.J’s Oyster Bed, Val 21 and Babaloo Tapas Restaurant, as well as serving as the Executive Chef and Director of Catering Services for the Cellar at Macy’s Union Square. Mark’s eclectic background allowed him, as founding partner and Director of Culinary Operations, to create original, diverse menus featuring local artisanal foods for Global Gourmet Catering. Most recently Mark launched and operated a shared use commercial commissary called SF FoodLab allowing food entrepreneurs to gain access to wholesale markets through commercial kitchen facility rentals.

Mark’s love of artisanal foods has inspired him to create some of his own products. Most recently, he has been producing honey from his own hives (Elaine, our Director of Sales, keeps bringing in her empty jars for refills). He has amassed a collection of hundreds of cookbooks of varying authors and cuisines.

Mark and his wife, Brenda, love to travel and Europe is a favorite destination. When in Europe, Mark usually finds time to take a class or two with some of the world’s most famous chefs, always learning new techniques from the masters of their craft.
